George was involved in many activities in his lifetime


Scouts
He joined the Parish Church choir when he was 8 and not long after became a member of the Church Lads Brigade and a founder member of the Leatherhead 1st Scout Troop.


Tons of Money
He was given good reviews in the local papers for his performances with the Leatherhead Dramatic Society and he also sang with the Leatherhead Operatic Society.
After leaving school at 14 he worked for the Leatherhead Building Company and then A. G. Nunn.

Finally he went to work at Godwin & Shiel's ironmongers shop in Kingston Road. He later became manager of the shop, working there until he retired.

During the Second World War George was a volunteer fire fighter and spent many a night in London during the Blitz.

George helped to establish a local branch of TOC H, a charity which supported the men fighting on the Western front.

For many years he raised funds for LEPRA to help combat leprosy.

He also raised funds for building Leatherhead Cottage Hospital where he helped to take Sunday Services until his death.

 

He was a regular visitor to the Royal School for the Blind in Leatherhead, writing many letters and helping with their cricket matches.

He loved his game of bowls and was a vice president of Leatherhead football club.
